The Royal Cyphers: VR Classic
While I was in Bournemouth, I ran across a beautiful example of the VR cypher, on an even more beautiful version of a pillar box. This example is representative of some of the earliest pillar boxes from the 19th Century, before the design was standardized into the cylindrical pillars that are so ubiquitous throughout the United Kingdom today. As much of a fan as I am of standardization, sometimes it's nice to run across something different. As such, I was absolutely thrilled to see this specimen.
